Palm Springs Residence 2.0
Palm Springs, California
2023
This design for a Palm Springs vacation home dissects the traditional enclosed desert courtyard typology and integrates desert plant life with its interior experience. Seven distinct pavilions, oriented to maximize the views of the San Jacinto Mountains, constitute the structure of the house. Large steel canopies float above each pavilion, providing shade from the desert sun and framing the stunning mountain views.
A fifty foot long art and sculpture gallery joins the main public living spaces and the private primary bedroom suite.
A combination of small, medium, and large gardens and terraces create additional living space with “outdoor rooms” for private living or entertaining.
The steel canopies floating above each pavilion provide optimal thermal comfort. In the summer months, interior spaces are shaded from the sun, while passive heating is captured during the winter. Photovoltaic panels on the upper roofs harvest energy from the sun year round. Large windows and sliding glass doors offer cross ventilation to each pavilion.
