Opportunity: This young family sought to envision an urban home that would allow them to balance their active social lives and entertaining schedule with their need for privacy.
Solution: This 15,000 square foot, two-story house with finished lower level occupies five city lots in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The design breaks down the large scale of the house, creating “outdoor rooms” and presenting an unimposing façade, sympathetic to the street and surrounding homes. Inside, expansive windows open to views of the elegant yards, courts, and terraces so the residents may enjoy the landscaped, outdoor spaces while both inside and out.
Value: Providing an axis point to the east and west wings, the center of the home features a dramatic, double- height dining room accented by a stately, ornamental stair that connects to both the upper and lower levels. Spanning 24 feet between east and west walls, this “floating” steel staircase provides a sculptural centerpiece that anchors the home and reflects a clean, unadorned aesthetic.
