Opportunity: Taking advantage of the momentum created by the upcoming new wing of the Regenstein Library, the University of Chicago has asked Booth Hansen to develop a comprehensive plan for the home of the library’s Special Collections Research Center (SCRC). Located on the ground floor of Regenstein Library, the SCRC seeks to expand its facilities and services, positioning itself as a preeminent archival library.
Solution: The current entry to the SCRC follows a circuitous path through elevator banks and multiple transitional spaces. As a result, many library patrons and students are unaware of its resources and exhibitions. In order to create greater visibility for the SCRC, the new Center incorporates open and inviting exhibit galleries with a more prominent public entry. By relocating the galleries and entry along the circulation path between the Library’s main desk and the new wing, the SCRC is featured prominently within the areas most frequented by a majority of patrons. Through focusing on visual connections and circulation, the resulting functionality of the Center is also enhanced with improved programmatic relationships and adjacencies.
Value: The new Special Collections Research Center has allowed itself room to grow and expand its services while simultaneously creating a better visual presence within the library. In doing so, it has positioned itself to serve the community as as one of the top archival facilities in the country.
