Lakewood Place – Phase II

Building on the success of Lakewood Place – Phase I, Booth Hansen has begun schematic design for Lakewood Place – Phase II. This phase will feature 3 bedroom/2 bath duplex units as well as 2 bedroom/2 bath units for a total of sixteen units in two buildings. The well appointed units will feature chef’s kitchens and enclosed parking. A greenroof with roofdeck will cap the buildings. Lakewood Place is located at Lakewood Avenue and Diversey Parkway in Chicago and is being developed with Ogden Partners. Construction is expected to begin in winter 2012.

Birazzi Featured in Discover Design Videos

Booth Hansen’s John Birazzi is featured in case study videos for the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Discover Design program. As a study for the integration of structure and design, the four videos feature John’s work on the Ratner Athletics Center at University of Chicago.

The Discover Design program is geared toward high school students, helping them explore, “site, systems, skin, society, space, and structure,” as it relates to the built environment.

Residence in New York Gallery Exhibit

Booth Hansen’s Beverly Shores Residence to be featured in the National Academy’s exhibit – The Annual: 2012. The exhibit showcases works from more than 100 architects and artists. The National Academy further explains, “The Annual reveals the cross-generational dialogue occurring in the art world by juxtaposing contemporary masters with emerging and mid-career artists, showcasing Academicians and invited artists and architects.” An opening reception will be held Tuesday evening, January 24th, 2012. The exhibit runs through April 29th at the National Academy Museum, 1083 Fifth Avenue, New York.

Join John Birazzi on Tuesday, February 7th for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s Technology Tuesday Lecture – ‘Understanding PCI Certification.’ John will speak about how to specify products from precast certified plants and present a case study of problems that may arise when certification is not in place. Design Work at Regenstein Library

Building on the success of the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) renovation and Reading Area renovation, the University of Chicago has hired Booth Hansen for the renovation of a multi-function space in the Regenstein Library. The approximately 4,500 square foot space is immediately adjacent to the SCRC and will share many of the design qualities of that successful renovation. Program elements include a catering kitchen, pre-function space, and a multi-function space to facilitate workshops, lectures, dinners, or university events. The project is currently in conceptual design with construction expected to begin in summer 2012.

Booth Hansen has been selected as one of several national firms to test a new green building software – Sefaira Concept. With Sefaira Concept, we have a powerful, real-time green building analysis tool at our fingertips. Traditionally, thermal simulation packages or energy models assess compliance at the end of the design process. Sefaira Concept will allow us to rapidly analyze and evaluate “what-if” options early and throughout the design process to provide our clients with relative energy savings of many sustainable design strategies.

New Staff Join Booth Hansen

Booth Hansen is pleased to announce three new additions to our team.

In September, Heidi Hagen (pictured at left) joined Booth Hansen as a member of the architectural design staff. Heidi, a prior intern at Booth Hansen, brings with her experience in academic, commercial, and residential projects. She earned her Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Joining Booth Hansen in October, Brad Lightner (pictured at right) is a member of our architectural design staff. Brad earned his master of architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and has prior work experience at firms in Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Brad is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Also joining Booth Hansen in October is Lillian Park (pictured at center.) A graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology, Lillian is a member Booth Hansen’s design staff. Lillian has prior work experience in commercial and mixed-use projects.

Booth Hansen Brings Total Performance Approach to Bay Area

Booth Hansen, an award-winning architecture, planning, and interior design firm headquartered in Chicago, is pleased to announce the opening of their west coast office. Located in downtown San Francisco, the new office is headed by Associate Principal, Joseph King, AIA, LEED AP.

With this new location, Booth Hansen brings their extensive experience in cultural, institutional, academic, commercial, mixed-use, and residential projects to the Bay Area and beyond. “We look forward to bringing our Total Performance approach to our clients in California,” stated Larry Booth, design principal at Booth Hansen.

Heidi Hagen

Heidi began her career at Booth Hansen as a summer intern in 2008. She joined the firm again in 2011 after completing her Master of Architecture and gaining valuable experience with Arcturis in St. Louis.

As a member of our architectural design staff, Heidi brings to her projects experience in educational, commercial, and residential design.

Heidi earned her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Ball State University and Master of Architecture from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Heidi is actively involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Brad Lightner, LEED AP

Brad joined Booth Hansen in 2011 after completing his Master of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as a teaching assistant in Building Systems.

He brings to Booth Hansen experience from firms in St. Louis and Indianapolis, as well as Perkins and Will in Chicago. Brad’s expertise in commercial and civic projects makes him a valuable resource.

Brad earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Ball State University; he is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Booth Hansen Begins Design Work on Virgin Hotel

Design work is underway on Virgin Hotels’ first North American Hotel.

This boutique hotel project involves the renovation of the historic Dearborn Bank Building at 203 North Wabash in Chicago. Designed by the firm Rapp and Rapp in 1928, 203 North Wabash is a classic example of Art Deco design. It is a City of Chicago Landmark Building and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Featuring 250 hotel rooms, restaurants, lounges, and other public spaces, the Virgin Hotel is expected to open in 2013.

Booth Hansen is pleased to be working with The John Buck Company and Virgin Hotels North America on this development.

Uptown Theatre Restoration

Booth Hansen is pleased to be working with JAM Productions on a study for the restoration of Chicago’s historic Uptown Theatre. A dramatic Spanish Baroque style building, the Uptown Theatre was designed by Chicago firm Rapp and Rapp and opened in 1925. The Theatre closed in 1981. Working with Booth Hansen, Jam Productions hopes to restore the Theatre to its original splendor.

Booth Hansen is well versed in historical theatre restoration, most notably the restoration of Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre (formerly known as the LaSalle Bank Theatre, the Shubert, and the Majestic.)

Science Center Honored by Chicago Architecture Foundation

The Booth Hansen designed Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center has been nominated for the 2011 Patron of the Year Award by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The Patron of the Year Award recognizes outstanding clients and contributors of architecture in the Chicago area.

Located at the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Plant Conservation Science Center’s mission of conserving plants is one of the most significant challenges of our time. From studying soil to banking seeds, from restoring habitats and protecting endangered plant species to developing new ones, Garden scientists are fighting plant extinction, pollution, and climate change through diverse and exciting research. The goal of the Plant Conservation Science Center is: make accessible to a wide variety of building users, science and how it affects each of us.

Booth Hansen to Renovate UIUC’s Smith Hall

Booth Hansen has been hired by the University of Illinois for renovation work to the historic Smith Hall on the Urbana-Champaign Campus. Home to the School of Music, Smith Hall was constructed in 1917 in the Beaux Arts style. Renovations will include the building envelope, practice rooms, and mechanical systems.

Booth and Cyphers Begin 4th Year at Northwestern University

With classes beginning on September 20^th, Booth Hansen’s Larry Booth and Scott Cyphers have begun their 4^th year as instructors at Northwestern University’s Architectural Engineering and Design Program. The Architectural Engineering and Design Program is directed by Booth, the Richard Halpern/RISE International Architect in Residence.

The six course certificate program is part of the McCormick School of Engineering Basic Studies and Civil Engineering Curriculum. Each year the students complete a variety of studio design exercises, become versed in three dimensional physical and digital modeling, develop their ability to communicate and collaborate with architects, and explore sustainability. The program has a strong connection to Chicago with visiting lectures from prominent architects, engineers, and builders.

Joining Larry and Scott this year as an instructor is Mark Sexton of Krueck and Sexton Architects.

UIUC’s Nugent Hall Earns Recognition

The Booth Hansen designed Nugent Hall at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign has earned two notable achievements.

Nugent Hall – Phase 1 has been certified LEED Silver by the United States Green Building Council. Among other energy and water saving features, the project utilized regional and recycled materials, a white roof, high performing insulation, and native landscaping.
