EDUCATION CENTER BREAKS GROUND

EDUCATION CENTER BREAKS GROUND

The Chicago Botanic Garden broke ground on its Booth Hansen designed Education Center on April 23, 2015. The groundbreaking encompasses the new seven-acre Regenstein Foundation Learning Campus, which includes the Education Center and Learning Campus Garden.
Opening in summer of 2016, the Education Center — the heart of the Learning Campus — will be a hub for plant-based community and civic engagement, intergenerational learning, hands-on coursework, and health and wellness activities.
In keeping with Booth Hansen’s and the Chicago Botanic Garden’s commitment to sustainability, the Education Center is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification. A variety of green strategies were employed including recycled and low-emission materials, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting; energy and water use data will be tracked in real-time and displayed on an electronic dashboard which will serve as a teaching tool for the building’s visitors.

ARTS & RECREATION CENTER BREAKS GROUND

ARTS & RECREATION CENTER BREAKS GROUND

The new Arts and Recreation Center located at 35th and Cottage Grove in the Oakland neighborhood will serve the greater Oakland, Douglas, and Bronzeville communities. Sited within Ellis Park, the two-story, 32,000 square foot field house is designed around a central lobby on axis with South Vincennes Avenue which directly connects with the Oakwood Shores community to the south. Located on a triangular site, the gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, fitness room, and club rooms are rotated about a central point that makes all functions visible from the lobby and responds to adjacent streets and approaches to the building. A roof deck covered by a sculptural trellis provides an outdoor gathering space with views of the park. Environmentally conscious design features, including a green roof, rain garden and solar thermal hot water system, help enhance the building’s sustainability.

LAKE & HALSTED TOWER BEGINS CONSTRUCTION

Construction has begun at Lake and Halsted on a 29 story mixed-use apartment tower. The project developed at 171 N. Halsted by Shapack Partners, Focus Development, and Atlantic Realty Partners broke ground on February 20 with sights set on a summer 2016 delivery.
The tower has been designed with sweeping curved façade to afford outstanding views for all units. Seamless glass curved walls provide a dynamic form that distinguishes it from the recent towers in this West Loop neighborhood. Just steps from the Randolph Street restaurant row, the tower includes 8,700 square feet of ground floor retail, 227 luxury residential units, and 3 floors of parking with 159 spaces. The tower is targeting LEED Silver certification and includes the following amenities: outdoor deck and pool, dog run, lounge and party room, fitness and yoga room, and 29th floor indoor/outdoor terrace with unobstructed views of the Loop. The development also includes a large green roof on top of the parking podium along with the other outdoor amenities.
