Opportunity: Cook County desired a comfortable yet dignified environment for their new Circuit Court dedicated to bringing justice to cases of domestic violence.
Solution: Upon entering the building, visitors experience the dramatic entry lobby which soars sixty feet in height symbolizing the civic function of the courthouse. Natural light from south-facing clerestory windows warms the light wood paneling and natural brick to add a calming effect appropriate for a family court. Wood panels, resin impregnated to enhance durability, and indirect lighting, continue this theme and are predominant in all lobbies, corridors, and courtrooms. Oval shaped raised ceiling areas symbolize the role of these courts in bringing people together to resolve conflicts.
Value: The interior design of this state-of-the-art Courthouse stands in sharp contrast to other courtroom facilities and reflects the unique activities within it. A Silver LEED-certified building, it was recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Academy of Architecture for Justice.
